These are just some of the logistics you will need to address to start your website business. As each new question arises, you can easily find the answers online or over the phone through tech support or your graphic artist. It looks daunting but before you know it, you will have an amazing website and business coming in through the virtual doors!

HOW TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

David Kovanen of Rubber Stamp Management told me in 2005 when I interviewed him for the first edition of this book, “We battle this every day. How can we stand out? Our strategy is simple: Earn your reputation on every single order and every single day. We have taken ten years to build a reputation, slowly. It’s just hard. I don’t have a lot of advice for others. Every company needs to find its own niche. What you cannot be is a copy of another company. So, you need to find something important that is totally different and unique and that you can build your reputation on.

“One company did elude us and developed a niche while we weren’t looking. In five years they have grown to be nearly our size in scrapbooking . . . but in a unique combination of home sales and online sales. We’re in a catch-up situation. We’ll probably spend several hundred thousand dollars recapturing our share of that niche. But this is all proof that niches are out there and are viable.”

Getting your URL (Universal Resource Locator), a fancy name for your domain name or Internet address, on major search engines such as Yahoo! and Google is a must. One way to try to get your business listed is to log on to www.submitexpress.com. This website will get your information to over forty search engines. Hit the scrapbook chat rooms, newsgroups, and any other avenue that will keep you in touch with scrappers and their interests and needs, in order to learn what might help you better differentiate your site.

The best way to stand out from the competition is to do your homework and really research what others are doing online. Make a list of your competitors and list what they are doing well and what could be better. How many offer shopping carts, contests, message boards, video tutorials, or chats?
